POSTAL OFFICER FAREWELLED

PRESENTATION TO MR. ANTON. The esteem in which Mr. A. G. Anton was held by members of the letterdelivery branch of the Post Office, or which he has been supervisor tor the past five years, was indicated at a farewell smoke concert given by the ■Wellington letter-carriers in the Farmers’ institute on Saturday night. Mr. Anton has been transferred to Dunedin as supervisor of mails. The chairman,. Mr. E. Gamble, assistant supervisor, took the opportunity of congratulating the Chief Postmaster, Mr. J. C. McCrea, and the Assistant Postmaster, Mr. \\ . H. Steele, on their promotion, and expressed pleasure at seeing them present to bid farewell to Mr. Anton. Ihe guest of the evening, he said, had been in the service for thirty years, the last five of which had been spent as supervisor at Wellington. The many human qualities of Mr. Anton, combined with a live discernment of character and a strict regard for duty, had made him not onl/v a popular favourite, but an official who would be difficult to replace. It was hoped that the time would soon come when he would return to Wellington on promotion. In proposing the toast “The Guest, the Chief Postmaster (Mr. J. C. McCrea) spoke of Mr. Anton’s popularity and efficiency as an officer, and presented him with a travelling rug and a case of pipes. In replying, Mr. Anton recorded his deep feeling of appreciation at the wholehearted and sincere manner in which the letter-carriers had i allied to bid him farewell. His associations during the past five years had been very happy. The toast “Superannuated Officers was proposed by Mr. R. K. Ccuper, who said that when a .man nad completed forty years’ service it wts “up to him” to drop out in order to allow a younger officer to fill the breach. Mr’. J. Johnston and Mr. E. Brooker, tiro retired officers, replied. An opportunity was taken to pay a tribute to Mr. Austin Blackie, whose activities in connection with the Social Club had been a live factor in keeping the men happily associated. The following were responsible for an exceedingly fine musical programme—Messrs. Albert Russell, Norman E. Aitken, D. Flood (Auckland), Charles Hickmott, P. Fitzgerald, W. IV. Marshall, Harry Attridge, Charles Moore, and his symphonic syncopaters.
