PREFERENTIAL RATES

FOR EXPORTERS USING AMERICAN SHIPS OPPOSITION TO MEASURE Washington, April 26. The House of Representatives Committee on the merchant marine recommended the postponement until May 1. 1925, of the operation of section ,28 of the Jones Act granting preferential railway rates to exporters employing American ships. This action is due to the tremendous pressure from cominerci al interests throughout the United States, who sent representatives to make anneals before Congress, the In-ter-State" Commerce Commission, and the Shipping Board itself, there being virtual unanimity that enforcement oi the section would demoralise the nation’s industry.—Aus.-N.Z.
