ATTACK ON LABOUR
“BUSY PATCHING OLD SUITS” LLOYD GEORGE’S SPEECH By Tbusgbaph—Pbbss Absoclattoh. CoFYBiaHT. London, April 23, The feature of Mr. Lloyd George’s speech at Llanfairfeehan was a sharp attack on Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, whom he advised to “wrap a wet towel round his head.” Then he thought he would discover that the Conservatives were seeking to turn him out of office as quickly as possible, whereas the Liberals were willing to help him to do well. Only a lunatic would deliberately make enemies out of friends, “Mr MacDonald is trusting to big phrases, but I have not got the intelllgence to understand them. bo tar Labour has been busy stitching and patching the old emits which the Coalition Liberal, and Conservative Governments left behind. Labour gave us the impression it would sweep all vested interests awav the moment it came into office • but it "is now finding that vested interests are not all capitalists; some, are Labour.” Mr. Lloyd George concluded by saying it was folly to spend strength, temper, zeal, enthusiasm, and ardour m fighting those who were eager to help, instead of combining to exterminate the foes of mankind. — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. LIBERAL SUPPORT OF LABOUR SOCIALISTS’ AIMS (Rec. April 25, 11.5 p.m.) London, April 24Speaking at Llandudno, Mr. Llovd George said: “I have been asked why we put the Labour Party in power. It was a horrible choice. We had to choose between thoroughly muddleheaded Diehards and fairly intelligent Socialists. The last Government lowered Britain’s prestige throughout the world, and we could not vote for a Government which made an appalling settlement of the American debt. The Liberals therefore chose to support a fairly intelligent party. Mr. MacDonald says he is going to remain, in office for two or three years, carrying out the Labour ideals, but he must know that is humbug, as Labour ideals include the overthrow of the existing system of private enterprise and the destruction of the system of private property, substituting communal property.”—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. “DAILY HERALD’S” COMMENT London, April 24, The “Daily Herald” characterises Mr. Lloyd George’s speech as an utterly absurd statement of the position. It points out that Labour is in office as an independent party. Mr. Asquith has declared that his party is independent. The Liberals can. if they like, and if they dare, combine with the Tories to defeat the Government. They will then have to answer to their constituency for that defeat, fit is that fact which causes them uneasiness.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
