SAILORS’ FRIEND SOCIETY
Easter was ft busy time for the Sailors Friend Society. On Good Friday afternoon the old-fashioned hot-cross bun tea was arranged for the mon, followed by a song pervics. when many ueasonablft hymns were chosen and sung by the nien. The soloists were Mesdames Mueller, Good, and Kettlewell, Misses Mueller, Omrod. Cole, and Messrs. Luff, Remmer and Edmonds. Light refreshments were dispensed in an interval. On Sunday morning Mr. B. Warnes took for his subject "Hope, ’ and the missioner took "Easter Cheer.’’ Mr. H. T. Johns read the lessons and Miss M. Spencer was the instrumentalist. In the Afternoon a number of men sat down to tea in the institute. _ Tlii hostesses were Misses Eunice Williams, M. Spencer, and Edna Williams. Mr. John Priestly was ths evenin~ F readier. He took for his subject: "If be Lifted Up.” The missiqner took the sermon, Mr. Thomas the lessons, and Mrs. Good was the organist. Mesdames Mueller and Miss V. Mueller were tho soloists. There was an excellent audience afterwards at ths song service in the institute. Tho hymns chosen by the men were sung with feeling. Those were led by Mrs. Good (piano), and Mr. Weston (clarionet). Hospitality closed a day that will long be remembered. Yesterday a merry lot of seafarers journeyed to Karori Park by special car, and there, in glorious weather, a day of rare happiness was passed in games under the leadership of the missioner jmd his workers. The ladies beat the men in the tug-of-wnr. Tho football match, Specials against All-comers, ivas won by the former by _5 goals to 4. Mr. E. Morris held the whistle. Lunch and tea were served by a band of workers led by Mrs. James Moore. On reaching the institute a most successful concert was given by Mrs. H. Col’pus, she nnd her performers met with rousing applause for their efforts. The performers were Mesdames Rimmers and Colpus, Misses Passau, M. Bairston.. M. Orrnrod, J. Denniston. U. William Weston, M. Kelly, and Messrs. Edmonds, Rimmers. G. Smith. W. R. Silencer, and Ross. Mrs. Rimmers and Miss Passau were nt the piano. Tho prize-winners in the day’s sports were Mesdames Stiles nnd Colpus. tne Misses M. Ormerod, E. Williams. T. Colpus. nnd Messrs. Halev, Smith. Pennings. Cattanach, Willoughby, Blake. F. Williams, Cruickshanks, Thomas W. R. Spencer Daniell Grain, Watson. Whiting, Ilicks.
