U.S. PRESIDENCY

THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE COOLIDGE’S NOMINATION ASSURED By Telegraph—Press A ssoci atiomCOPYHIGHT. (Rec. April 21, 7.55 p.m.) Washington, April 20. The chairman, Mr. Butler, of President Coolidge’s Campaign Committee, has formally announced that the President has already secured the support of a sufficient number of delegates to the Republican National Convention on Tune 10 to assure his nomination for the Republican candidacy for the Presideucv upon the first ballot. Mr. Butler has indicated that the convention will consist of 1109 delegates, of who mthe support of 555 is necessary for nomination, and at the present time 563 delegates have already been chosen, who have been instructed to select President Coolidge, or have expressed their intention to do so. The chief method whereby the delegates receive their instructions is the so-called primary, whereby at a legal election, at which only the members of the party can vote, 'such members indicate whom they desire to nominate for the Presidency at the National Convention. The 'greater number of such primaries already held show unmistakably that President Coolidge will be the Republican nominee. It is now expected that serious dissension may occur over the choice of Vice-President. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
