Good Friday was something of a record for the Otira Tunnel, both in passengers and freight (states the “Grey River Argus”). Apart from 1500 excursionists who came in two trains to Otira from Christchurch, the ordinary express trains conveyed 570 passengers through, 300 coming westward, and 270 going eastward. The tonnage carried through totalled 3149, 2112 tons going up, and 1037 tons coming down. There were no fewer than seven goods trains.
