SCHOOL LIBRARIES
ISSUE OF BOOKS SHOWS BIG INCREASE The phief Librarian (Mr. Baillie), .re porting to the City Council last night in reference to the school libraries’ scheme, stated that the issues during the past year showed an increase of 38,545 —of this increase the three Petone schools accounted for over 10.000 — tho balance being generally distributed among the city schools. Eight hundred and thirty-seven was the total increase in the number of bociks sent put to 33 schools; this number was more than accounted for by the Petone schools. It would be remembered that tho Petone service was paid for. A report from Mr. J. E. F. Berry, librarian in charge of the Schools Department, was enclosed, in which that officer stated that tho issue of books went no tremendously last year. “Of course,” lie said, “there were more schools participating in the scheme, but I am sure that you will agree with and appreciate the greatly extended use that has been made of the library. The total issues of books last year was 157,777, and there were fewerbooks lost, and books were returned in better condition than in previous years. This year I have sent out 9821 volumes to 33 schools, and these books were made up into 131 separate collections. At the end of last year I received many letters expressing the appreciation of headmasters and school committees.”
