BRILLIANT SHOOTING

STRUGGLE FOR BELT COMMENCES F. H. JAMES LEADING IN AGGREGATE RIFLEMEN IN FINE FORM A very high standard of shooting has characterised .so far the National Rifle Association s meeting at Trantham this year. The matches filed yesterday were the first to count for the Belt and competition was exceedingly keen. Many well-known riflemen finished well "down the list with ordinarily good scores, whereas at the top returned cards that reflected brilliant marksmanship. The ranges for tho Marlborough Match j,. which was fired in the morning, were 300 yards and 500 yards, ten shots at each distance, and at the first distance possibles were common. A light left wind, probably 1 to 2 degrees, did not trouble the marksmen to any appreciable extent, and the. overcast sky tended towards good visibility. At 500 yards the wind was inclined to become gusty, and riflemen were kept juggling with their gauges. M. Connor, of Hastings, who won the match, dropped only one point on the two ranges and started oil with a possible at 300 yards. F. Whiteman finished second with 98, which also included a possible at 300 yards. Captain H. 'Simmonds, whose consistent shooting on the opening day made speculation rife as to nis chances in the aggregate, commenced well again with a possible at 300 yards, but came to grief at 500 yards, finishing up with 96. Similarly in the Canterbury Match (ten shots at COO yards), it took a possible to win, and this was secured by L. A. Caldwell (Karori Club). F. H. James (Napier) came second with 48, and there were numerous 47’s. A tricky rear fish-tail wind troubled most marksmen in the Auckland Match, ten shots at 300 yards and 600 yards. James, who has been keeping close to the top scorers, shot consistently at both ranges, putting on 49 at the first range and 48 at the second. H. Simmonds finished up with the same score, 97, but his poorer shoot at tho long lange gave him only second place. Simmonds started off with a possible and made 47 at COO vards. Both those marksmen are expected to figure prominently in the King’s Fifty, to shoot off for the King’s Prize and the Ballinger Belt. James is leading in the aggregate. Air. Arthur Ballingur. whose belt is the subject cf such keen friendly rivalry, attended yesterday as a spec- * To-day’s programme will probably comprise the Wellington Match (300 vards and 600 yards), ten shots), Hawke’s Bav Match (900 yards, ten shots), and Otago Match (800 and 900 yards. ten shots). Following are yesterday’s results:
