SIR FREDERICK BRIDGE ENGLAND’S MOST EMINENT ORGANIST London, Afareli 18. The death is announced of Sir Frederick Bridge, the author of many cantatas and oratorios.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Sir Frederick Bridge, one of England’s most eminent organists and musicians, was born at Oldbury, in Worcestershire, in 1844, and from his earliest youth had been associated with tho Church of England. He was educated at the Cathedra] School, Rochester, and was a chorister in that Cathedral from 1850 to 1559. In. those years he studied music, with tho organ as his instrument, and became assistant organist at the Rochester Cathedral in 1865, this proving tho stepping stone to higher church appointments. For four years he was organist at Trinity Church. Windsor, and in 1869 was appointed to tho Afanchester Cathedral, where he remained until 1875, when bo became organist at Westminster Abbey, a post ho retained until 1918. when he retired with tlie titee of Emeritus Organist From 1896 until 1922 he was conductor of tho Royal Choral Society in London, and was Gresham Professor of Alusic from ’B9O. He also occupied from 1902 the King Edward Professorship of Alusic at tho London University. Sir Frederick directed the musical side of the Coronation services. when both King Edward VII and King George V were crowned.
