When the Main Highways Board met last week the chairman announced the resignation of Mr. Godfrey, consequent upon the departmental duties attaching to his appointment ins Secretary for Marine requiring his whole attention. Before tho board concluded its sitting, it was decided, on the motion of Mr. Jull, to record in the minutes the board’s appreciation of Mr. Godfrey’s advice .and assistance and their regret at his resignation as a member of the board.

The deep rcsjiect in which the late Mr, Martin Chapman, K.C., was held, was manifested by the. large attendance of mourners at his funeral yesterday. Prior to the funeral, a service was held at St. Paul’s ProCathedral, which was attended by tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), all the members of tho Supreme Court bench, Sir Francis Bell (Attorney-Gen-eral), Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C. (president of the Law Societv), members of the firm with which deceased was a member. the Hon. AV. E. Collins, M.L.C.. Sir John Luke, M.P.. a largo representation of the legal profession, and many prominent citizens. Sir Frederick Chapman, brother of deceased, was the chief mourner, and the pall-bearers were members of the staff of Messrs. Chapman, Skerrett. Tripp, and Blair. Tho services at tho ProCathedral and at tho graveside at Karori were conducted by Archdeacon A. M. Johnson

Dean Lane, of tho Lower Hutt, whoso funeral yesterday morning attracted people of all classes and creeds from near and far. The interment took place in tho Petone Catholic cemetary, and the cortege was the largest over known in the district. At 9.30 a.m., solemn requiem mass was celebrated at the Lower Hutt Church. Dean Holley was the celebrant and with him were Father Quealy (of Petons) as deacon, and Father Moran as master of ceremonies. Archbishop O’Shea, of AVellington. occupied the vice-papal throne with Monsignor' McKenna in attendance. His Grace, in u brief address, eulogised the character and life work of tho late Father Lane, commending his faithfulness to God and tho Church and his o-oodness to all mankind Catholic clero-v from all parts of the district attended, and among others at the ser vice were: Sir Joseph AV aid. Mr. T M AVilford. M.P.. Mr. AV. T. .Strand (Mayor of Lower Hutt), Rev. James McCaw (Presbyterian pastor), and the Rev Mr. HounseU (Anglican Minister at the Hutt). Lewis “father” of Queensland journalists, who was icr .w vears chief sub-editor of tho Brisbane “Tcle"rai>h.” Although he was, ill, he insisted on remaining on duty. Two days after, however, ho had to seek medical advice, and he was ordered into n private hospital, where he died next afternoon.
