TOGO’S FLAGSHIP
RETENTION AS MONUMENT DESIRED PETITION TO SIGNATORIES OF TREATY (Rec. March 18, 9.35 p.m.) Tokio, March 17. A group of Japanese visited, the American Ambassador, Mr. C. E. Woods, asking him to use his influence to save from destruction the Mtkasa, Admiral Togo’s flagship in the RussoJapanese War, which must be scrapped under the Washington Treaty. '1 hey desire to retain the vessel as a monument Mr. Woods promised to transmit the petition to the State Department, but stressed the fact that the United Slates was only one'of the Powers which signed the treaty. • Tho visitors declared that they would present tho petition to tho other signatories. Admiral Togo informed a correspondent: “Wo must conform to the treaty, but we would like to seo the vessel preserved, although she is useless and was seriously damaged by the earth-quake.”—Aus.-N.Z.
