A KNOTTY PROBLEM

AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS IN DRY AREA

By Telegraph.—Pp.ess Association. Ashburton, February 4

Should liquor bo imported for the entertainment of visiting cricketers? This question exercised the minds of the members of the Ashburton County Cricket Association at a meeting on Saturday night, which finally decided to import some if required by the New South Wales eleven which arrive here next Tuesday. The discussion arose through a remark by a member that some refreshment of this sort would be desirable. . Mr. 0. G. Andrews took another view. Knowing the Ashburton county was a no-license district t'he Australians, he said, would not expect any ale provided, and it might be a reflection upon the district if there was liquor provided in view of the county being a dry area. “It would be an insult not to offer them any,” said Mr. H. Millichamp. The chairman (Mr. H. Boddmgton) reminded members that, the Australians were catered for in this direction on their last visit. Mr. Pritchard believed that many of the visitors would like a glass of beer. Was liquor provided with the ground luncheon in licensed areas ? he asked. Mr. Diomas: “No, but it can generally be obtained at tlie secretary s office.” In this matter, he. contended, they would be up against, and must be careful regarding the law. The polioe-sergfeant, he stated, was rather particular. Mr. Pritchard again urged that ale be provided. There was no need, he said, to make the function an “open slather,” but he would like to see the visitors catered for if they so wished.
