WAIRARAPA HIGH SCHOOL

TENDERS FOR NEW HOSTEL DEPUTATION TO MINISTER A deputation, consisting of Messrs. AV. T. Grundy, chairman of the Board of Governors. A. Riven, chairman of thg Masterton Trust Lands Trust, and 0. Pragnell, Mayor of Masterton, waited on the Minister of Education yesterday, to ask his authority to go on with the erection of the hostel for l>oy®, in connection with the Masterton High School. Mr. Grundy explained to the Minister that originally the sum of £lO,OOO was raised on Education Board debentures in the Wairarapa, which sum had been retained by the Government for some months. The trust arranged to pay interest on this amount for a period of three years, provided a hostel was ovected. Mr. Riven drew the Minister’s attention to the resolution passed by the trust, declining to meet an interest bill until that was done. He also stated that the trust had contribued £lOOO towards the laying-out of the grounds; £525 for one year’s interest on the £lO,OOO, and -£3OO interest on £4OOO raised for the building ot the hostels themselves. Included in this £3OO was a grant of £BO made to the High School Board by the trust. It bad also been recorded on the minutes, said Mr. Riven, that on completion of the hostels the trust would favourably consider a substantial grant towards furniture. ■ The Minister reviewed his previous consideration of the matter. Cabinet had in 1922, he said, given authority for the issue of debentures up to £lO,OOO. To a deputation from the High School Board last July he said that if the board could put up a building for a figure named by him he would help them, and put the matter before Cabinet again. Subsequently the board’s revised plans were submitted to him, but the departmental architect was not satisfied that the building could be erected at the figure then quoted. “I approve,” said the Minister, “of the board being authorised to call immediately for tenders, if the plans, a* revised, are approved by the Department.” •
