BREACH OF FAITH

— * UNITED STATES’ PROTEST TO CHINA MURDERER OF MISSIONARY PARDONED (Bee. January 18, 7.45 p.m.) Washington, January 17. The United States has lodged _ a vigorous protest with China against President Tsaokun’s pardoning of General Chang Ching-yao, the former military governor of Hunan, who was responsible for the murder of the Rev. Mr. Reimert, the American missionary, in June, 1.920. The protest stresses tho point that it is a breach of faith, since the Chinese Government had held the general guiltv of murder, and declares that it will make it difficult for the United States to again place credence in any assurances which the Chinese may give. Doubt is expressed, however, whether the pardon will be ’ revoked, and it is regarded as more serious coming at a time when numerous outrages upon foreigners in China had been reported. Official circles, are very much disturbed at the situation, which ia considered to be extremely unsafe for Occidentals.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. '
