SENSATIONAL PLOT

TO SECURE PRISONER’S ESCAPE ELABORATE SCHEME FRUSTRATED (Rec. January 18, 7.15 p.m.) Melbourne, January 18. A sensational plot to secure the escape of a long senteneb prisoner from Melbourne gaol was frustrated. The prison authorities and detectives secured information showing that the scheme had been elaborately prepared. Certain persons outside as well as some of the other prisoners were involved 1 Ropes and tackle had been smuggled into the gaol, and hidden in readily accessible places. Facilities had been made also for the would-be tescapees to reach the exercise yard, scale the and enter a waiting motor-car. Any .warders offering resistance were to bo bound or otherwise dealt with. The plot was to ha’ve eventuated on Sunday morning, but the authorities were forewarned, and took the necessary precautions to prevent it, and al ;o took charge of a motor-car found writing outside the prison. .Pending further inquiries, n warder on duty in a sentrv box on the prison wall at, the time TTie escape was to be carried out has been suspended.
