TERMS OF PROBATION

MUST BE COMPLIED WITH The necessity for strict compliance with the terms of probation release was again stressed by Mr. T. P. Mills, probation officer, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday; when a young driver named Henry Robert Smith was charged with failure in that respect. “This man has not reported regularly,” said Mr. Mills, “and I’m continually stirring him up. He was admitted to probation for two years in .March, 192‘2, for the theft of £74 from his employer, and since then he has paid back only £24. His wife ivorks, and while she does he wont. He must regard the matter of reporting as a serious one.” Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson said accused was making an effort to repay the money. On occasions he had been out of work, and, lacking the wherewithal to satisfy an instalment, he had been loth to visit the probation office. Surprise was expressed by the Magistrate (Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.) tnat a man, over so simple a matter as reporting should spoil the future which the granting of probation had provided. “I’ll give you another opportunity,” decided His Worship, “but remember and keep the conditions in the future.” Accused was convicted and discharged.
