‘BOMBS’ AT £1 A BOTTLE
$ ASHBURTON’S ILLICIT LIQUOR TROUBLES By Teleouaph—Press Association. Ashburton, January 17. Ashburton is not so dry as is generally supposed, lu spite of the prohibition regime the beer admitted under permits last year amounted to 30,350 gallons, as against 17.000 three years ago. Wines and spirits decreased in popularity, the totals for. the year being: Whisky 2199 gallons, brandy 145, gin 54, rum 37, aiid ivine 572. " . The December importations, including Christmas cheer, were: Beer 7723 gallons, whisky 318, brandy 27, gin 5, rum 31, and wine 120. The figures obviously do not include illicit liquor, of which the police campaign gives occasional glimpses. It is declared that much illicit liquor is traded, and bottles of whisky, known as bombs, have been a marketable commodity at a sovereign each per bottle.
