THE RACING WORLD

WAIROA MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

WORK ON TRENTHAM TRACKS A very light rain fell during training operations at Trentham yesterday morning, and a cold wind made things unpleasant for onlookers. The trial grass was open for fast work. Lhe going was on the dead side, but by next Tuesday promises to be ideal. Con and Ashley Reed were out riding work along with, the Butler apprentices. Young Clout and W. Tippets also assisted. J. Lowe was the early bird, and he sent Peach Brandy and Black Rod four furlongs which took 52 2-ssec. Basso and Sunshot were companions over six furlongs, and they finished in that order the time being Imin. 20sec. Bayana always had the best of Carawoek over four furlongs, run in oosec. Star Ranger and Laughing Stock took 53=ec. for the same distance. Merit alone ran five furlongs, the first four taking 51sec. Martinique was sprnited down the straight. Lake Uru and Vindictive went six furiongs, the journey taking Imin. 18 2-ssec. S. Reid’s pair, Piquant and Glimpse, were given half a mile, and the former finished in front in Slsec. Kilmar, alone, ran three furlongs in 41 sec., and Quest and Quiescent a similar distance in 37 3-ssec. Militaire was not pushed over six furlongs, taking Imin. 21sec. . Over a mile Last Crust was always going better than Zero Hour, they took Imin. 47sec. Kilminster had a slight advantage over Stream in a seven-ffirlong flutter, the time being Imin. 33sec. Diamond Ring and Bagdad finished fn that order over a six-furlong course in Imin. 20sec. A quartet of two-year-olds, in Pleasant Surprise, Calm Eve, Degage, and Pantry Maid went four furlongs in 61 3-ssec., finishing in the order named. This was a surprise for the touts who picked Pantry Maid to show out best. Entre Nous, alone, took 51 3-ssec. to cover four furlongs. Bonny Friend had a three-length call over Heathcote at the end of five furlongs run in Imin. 6sec. After breakfast Roseday went a mile m Imin. 41sec. He was assisted over the last part by Backsheesh. According to reports at headquarters yesterday morning, Parody is not to be a starter in the Telegraph Handicap. A number of teams are due to arrive to-day, and amongst those expected are F. Davis, with Highland, Queen March, an;! Nigger Minstrel; H. Cutts, with Wild Hind, Winning Hit, and Rag Fair; T. H. Gillett, with Dame Straitlace, Prince Ferouz, Sprinkler, and Integrity; G. Murray-Aynesley, with Limelight; and W. G. Hobbs, with Palestrina, Gay Juliet, and Gay Queen ; and R. Brough, with Muraaht and Carnbeo. The last mail brought word that the ox-New Zealander, H. Thompson, met with an accident at Caulfield last month when riding Awayaway. The injuries he sustained are not serious. It is reported that the well-known stallion Balboa changed hands at the Cromwell meeting, his new owner being a Dunedin sportsman. Warhue has been thrown out of training, and his three-year-old half-brother, Goosestop, has taken his place in J. Campbell’s stable at Riccarton. Pilliewinkie, who has been resting since he returned to Riccarton from Auckland, was given a dose of, physio i last Saturday. He has made his reap- ■ pearance on the tracks, and appears to be in the best of health. At the end of the flat-racing season in England it was reported that F. Bullock was retiring as a jockey. Bullock lost no time in contradicting this rumour through the Press, and stated that he would continue to ride for Lord Astor and others. Prominent horsemen command such good fees in England that naturally none wish to retire while they are still showing good form. The Crown Imperial—Mungista mare Crown Jem has been leased from Sir George Hunter by Messrs. P. Hunter and F. Armstrong, but will remain in R. Gooseman’s stable at Hastings. First Born is looking very, well at present, and is expected to carry in his good record when the autumn meetings come round. As a four-year-old last season the Thurnham gelding won six races, was placed second five times, and third twice in twenty starts, and among his winning performances were victories in the Vittoria Hurdle Handicap and Winter Hurdles at the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. His total earnings in the 192223 season amounted to £2074. The Melbourne Cup winner, Night Watch, has never struck anything approaching his true form since he wont to India, and, as he is ten years old he never will. He was a runner for the Harrison Plate, 1 mile 3 furlongs, at Calcutta on December 7, and with Bst. 41b. (minimum 7st. 71b.) was third last in a field of twelve. An important racing partnership has been formed in Melbourne between Messrs. George Tye and J. R. Corteen, who have been, for some time, the principal natrons of Cecil Godby’s stable. Mr. d’ye will put 19 horses into the partnership, while Mr. Corteen’s contribution will bo seven. The last-named owner will retain the champion two-year-old Heroic. It is expected that the partnership will have 30 horses in active work shortly. Thus it will be seen that the most powerful combination in Australia will he located in the Victmian capital. Both owners have met with much success, for which Godbv’s skill as a trainer has counted a great deal. W. O’Halloran does not have a great number of mounts in public (says a Melbourne paper), but of those he secures he makes good use. He has won six races on metropolitan and country courses this season. O’Halloran was born in New Zealand. He went to Melbourne to ride that good horse De Gama in his races some year? ago. He won among other races the

Heatiierlie Handicap on De Gama. Returning to the Dominion, increasing weight caused him to fake to riding over jumps. Ho won the Great Western Steeplechase on Recharge, and the Otag- Hurdle Race on Master Hamilt"ii A fall at .Napier caused a fractured knee, and O’Halloran was outlet the saddle for nearly 12 months. He went to Australia about two years ago. O Halloran is 25 years .ml, and is a flat Jess rider. WAIROA MEETING THEIC WINS CARROLL MEMORIAL By Telegraph—Press Association Wairoa, January 17.
