SMUGGLING A FUR
SEAMAN HEAVILY FINED .■ By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, January 10. At the Magistrate’s Court to-d'ay a seaman on the steamer Omtuu, from Newcastle,' pleaded guilty to smuggling a marabout stole, valued at £6. Counsel for accused pleaded ignorance on the part of his client, who was asked by a lady friend at to purchase the stele nt Sydney. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of £25, and said he regretted tlhat the law did not allow him to impose a smaller fine. He considered a fine of 4110 was sufficient <o meet the case.
