WEMBLEY PAGEANT
REPLY TO CRITICISM. • London, January 9. Reply to criticisms as to needless expense incurred in the Wembley Pageant (which, it is contended, should be organised as a voluntary effort); also to a suggestion that Parliament may not pass a vote of expenses amounting to £250,000, and to complaints that the overseas Trade Department is organising the spectacle in a hole-and-corner fashion, and official statement explains why the Government is participating. A committee, including representatives of the Admiralty, War Office, and Overseas Trade Department is responsible for the arrangements. The personnel consists of large numbers of the Services, including Cavalry, Boy Scouts, and voluntary performers. It is intended'to give the Dominions opportunities of displaying striking incidents and scenes in every-day life. It is anticipated that the gate-money will fully cover the cost. The Government is retaining control because the assistance of the Services and the cooperation of the Dominions is essential to success.—Sydney “Sun” Cable.
