WHEAT EMBARGO
TO BE CONTINUED FOR A YEAR MILLING WHEAT Id. BETTER That the embargo on the importation of wheat and flour will bo extended for at least a year from February 29 next, was announced by the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Nosworthy) yesterday. This is in accordance with the Government’s policy to encourage a sufficient Dominion production. “Unfortunately,” said Mr. Nosworthy, “unfavourable weather conditions and other causes have resulted in a Dominion crop which must to some extent prove short of the country’s requirements, and a certain amount of importation must therefore be arranged for. In conformity with the current year’s arrangements, an agreement has been arrived at between millers and farmers, under which milling wheat of the coming harvest will be bought by millers at Id. per bushel advance on last season’s prices. Flour and bread will not be increased in price, but an adjustment of bran and pollard pr.ces will be made under which bran will bo increased by 10s. a ton, and jwllard reduced by' that amount. This will bring prices and the true market value of these commodities into better relationship. The agreement will operate, with the consent of the Government, when tho new season’s wheat comes on the market.”
