THE RADIUM CAMPAIGN

WORK FOR THE WOMEN A. meeting of women called by the Mayoress, Mrs. It. A. Wright, to discuss what help could be given with the radium appeal was held in the Mayoress’s room in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, and was presided over by Mrs. Wright. Apologies for their unavoidable absence wore received from Mrs. Coleridge, Mrs. Tripp, Mrs. D. C. Bates. Sirs. Florence Porter, Mrs. Middleton, and Mrs. W. Nathan (who enclosed a cheque for £5O as a contribution to the fund). A cheque for £25 was received from Mr. and Mrs. Moorhouse.

The Mayoress explained that throughout the Wellington district it was hoped to raise £lO,OOO. That district included Taumarunui, New Plymouth, Napier, and the districts thereabout down to Wellington, and also the Nelson and Marlborough provinces. With so large an area she thought that thfo amount ought not to be so very difficult.

Considerable discussion followed, tho suggestions brought forward including a house to house canvass throughout the city, a street collection, and the approaching of Hie different Ratepayers’ Associations, rend asking them to organise collections wherever there was an association, with the help of women and women’s organisations, who were ready to assist.-

The Mayor, who was present, suggested that if they deoided to hold a street day, that they concentrate upon it and make it a big city effort. Tho Publicity Committee of the Radium Appeal Campaign would arrange for the publicity work —theirs to. sou about tho supply of collectors. The city’s share of the amount to be raised was reckoned to lie £5OOO, of which they had in hand £l5OO, and if they could raise £lOOO with tho street collection he thought they would have gone quite a good way towards their goal. It was finally decided to hold a street collection day, the date to be Friday, December 21. A suggestion was made that the different business houses l-e asked 'if a collection box might be left in each place, so that everyone there might, give voluntarily what they could. B was decided that the business houses should be approached with the suggestion. It was also proposal +baf. one or two well-known bands should be asked if they would consent to give concerts on one or two Sundays, the collection to be given to the fund. This also was agreed to.
