FOUNDATION STONE LAID Durin" the proceedings at old boys’ day at Wellington College yesterday His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Jellieoe) laid the foundation stone of the new pavilion to be erected on the college grounds. Those present included Mr. J. S. Elliott (president of the Old Boys’ Associaiton), Mr J. P. Firth C.M.G., and Mr. W I' • Ward, chairman of the College Board of GovDr. Elliott said the chief, credit, for the fine collego ground's belonged to Mr J. P. Firth. So far as the new pavilion was concerned the old boys had made themselves responsible for the work. Owing to the increased cost of material thelbuilding when completed would greatly exceed the estimate. Dr Elliott said he felt sure that there were still a number of old boys who had not subscribed and who would he glad to pay for a few bricks for the edifice. „ , After declaring the stone well and truly laid, the Governor-General said that education influenced the future of the race the people of New Zealand, and the Empire. His Excellency expressed pleasure at the great growth of Wellington College, and he hoped to bo able to sit in the new pavilion next year and watch tho old boys heat the present boys or tho present boys boat the old bovs. The Governor-General, at the request of Mr. T. R. Cresswell, presented to Dr. Elliott a panoramic photograph of the bovs of the college, and to IMr. J. P. Firth a pen and ink sketch.' tho work of Dlr. AV. A. Lavelle, of the new buildings one of which has been named ‘‘Firth House.”
