SECRET HISTORY

WHY THE HILLSBOROUGH SALE WAS POSTPONED. Th© announcement of the postponment of the sale of the Hillsborough sections caused the greatest, surprise amongst a large number of intending purchasers. Numerous rumours as to th© reason have been freely discussed. One current report was that it had been held np at the request of a syndicate intending to erect a very elaborate set of flats, and who required mor© time to complete their nlans. Another reason suggested difficulties with tho Hospital Board, while a third was that Mr. George had changed his mind, and intended to build on the sections himself. The real facts, however, are that when Mr. George’s lawyers came to draw up conditions of sale, it was found that although, the plan of subdivision complied in every detail with all'tho requirements of the city building by-laws, that a valid contract could not be mad© out until the, corporation’s formal sanction, wlnc-h could only be granted at a full meeting of the council, had been first obtained. Tliis approval was granted at the council’s meeting last evening, and the sale will now positively be held on Wednesday next at 3 p m. upon the ground. 'The above-mentioned plans, together with conditions of sale to be signed by purchasers, are now on view at the office of Messrs. S George Nathan and Company, Customhouse Quay.—(Published by arrangement.)
