NOT PAYING HER WAY
AUSTRALIA’S IMPORTS EXCEED EXPORTS
NEED OF SKILLED WORKERS FOR FACTORIES
(Rec. November 29, 9 p.m.) Sydney, November 29. At the annual meeting of the Cham; ber of Manufacturers’ Association, Mr. W. W. Kerr, in his presidential address, quoted statistics showing that Australia was not paying her way. For the past three years the imports were valued at £163,000,000, and the exports at £132,000,000, showing a balance on the wrong side of tho ledger of £31,000,000. If this continued Australia would become bankrupt, because in addition to paying for her imports by her exports she had to pay interest on the Federal and State indebtedness approximating a hundred millions. Referring to immigration, Mr. Kerr said the Government was making a tragic mistake in confining it to men and boys for the land and domestics. These were wanted, but we also wanted skilled workers for factories, for the future prosperity aud safety of Australia largely depended on the development of the manufacturing as well as the primary industries. —Press Assn.
