ARBITRATION COURT

WELLINGTON SITTINGS PRELIMINARY BUSINESS The sittings of tho Arbitration Court opened yesterday before IDs Honour Mr. Justice Frazer, Mr. M - Scott (employers’ assessor), and Mr. H. Hunter (unions’ assessor). A number of compensation cases were mentioned, but in most instances they were not set down for hearing on particular dates. Three actions were set down for Thursday next, namely, R. W. Norman v. Wellington Harbour Board, Alfred F. Walter Vi Wellington Harbour Board, and Thomas Dougan v. Wellington Woollen Co. Tho following cases were hold over: Christopher Rigby v. Whitanui, Ltd., Maud B. Canning v. Munt, Cottrell, and Co., Rose A. Barclay v. H. G. Williams, William Thomas v. Arthur C. Major, Isaac Allen v. Henry Proton, Thomas O. Smith v. Richard Tuckwell, Frank Tuckwell v. Mary Ann Traynon, George Ryan v. Union Steam Ship Co., James A. Sloan v. Otaihapo Meat C 0... John Ferguson v. S. MacPhee (adjourned to Napier), Elsie M. Gore v. W. Williamson and Co. A number of unopposed applications to add parties were granted. Hearing of the Wellington Dairy Employees’ Union dispute was fixed for Wednesday, Deecember 5. The Stewards and Cooks and Seamen’s Union disputes were adjourned to tho next sitting. Mr. Kennedy asked that good notice should be given of the date, owing to some of his witnesses being in Sydney and San Francisco. His Honour replied that as soon as the Court could fix the date the parties would be notified, but about the end of February would be approximately correct. The Wholesale Storemen’s Union dispute was set down for next Tuesday, at 10 a.m. - In the painters and decorators’ dispute, Mr. Grenfell asked that the Court should hear evidence in the four centres, as it /was the first Dominion award, and it was advisable that local conditions should be put before the Court before an award was made. Mr. Cornwall opposed this, but tho request was agreed to. In regard to the Wellington shop assistants’ dispute, Mr. Croskery asked that the matter he held over, as he intended to 4lle a Dominion dispute. Mr. Hammond offered no objection,providing tho Dominion dispute was filed, and this was agreed to. Mr. Hgrnmond applied for an amendment of the grocers’ award so far as tho country districts were concerned, making the time of starting work 8 a.m. and the closing hour on Christmas Eve and Nnw Year’s Eve 10 p.m., providing 1J hours’ overtime was paid. Mr. McKeon, for tho union, agreed to the proposal, and the application was granted.
