LEAP FOR LIBERTY
FROM A RUNNING TRAIN
Excitement was caused on tho incoming Napier express yesterday afternoon, while it was travelling at a speed of some thirty miles an hour, between To Hero and AVaikanae, by a man leaping from the train. It appears that a constable was in charge of a mental patient from Dannevirke. on route to the Porirua Afental Hospital. The man was looking out of tho window alongside the constable* and suddenly jumped through the window. Tho constable made a grab at him and caught hold of his overcoat, but it camo oft. and the man fell to the ground. The alarm was given the train was stopped and backed towards where the affair happened, but there was no sign of the patient. The train proceeded on its journey, but the-constable remained behind to continue the search. He. was told by some snrfacemeu that they had seen a num going over the hill, and tho constable followed up the clue, and discovered his man hiding behind some scrub. He had sustained no injury as a result of his leap, beyond a few scratches on his face, and was taken to his destination bv the New Plymouth express.
