The “Daily Express’s” correspondent at Belfast states that de Valera is attempting to reach Cork. It is believed that he has assumed a disguise. His escape hiherto has been due to skill in making-up. He escaped after the fall of the Four Courts in the garments of a hearse driver. Dan Breen is one of the most and most desperate rebel leaders. He always carries two revolvers and declares that he will never be taken alive. — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

Following closely on police revelations after the London midnight raid of Irish rebels’ plans of war on London on a grand scale, comes news of the capture of Austin Stack, the fiercest rebel, on whom was found documents saying that further military efforts in Ireland were futile. The London raid was a sequel to last month’s round-up, when documents were found, tho contents of which have now for the first time been disclosed. The police discovered a roll of members of the special section of the rebel army operating in London, and elaborate plans for the destruction of underground stations, attacks on Cabinet Ministers, and other high officials raids on prison vans, the , destruction of light and power stations, and the secret enlistment of London police in rebel forces. * Details given of Brixton Gaol formed a complete guide-book, with, the names of warders and times of duty. Scotland Yard was similarly listed, and Old Bailey exits and routes of prison vans described with a view to the rescue of prisoners. Tire youngest member of the special section was aged sixteen, and none were over twenty-two. Details were given of their qualifications in revolver and rifle shooting and motor driving. Although many houses were searched last night, only two men were, detained, ani charged with possessing firearms. The police have n firm grip on the conspiracy, and the plans were frustrated. Stack was found unarmed and alone hiding in a ditch near where Liam Lynch was captured. He was caught while troops and aeroplanes were hunting for de Valera. He was then taken to Clonmel, unrgsisting, where he was found to possess a document bearing the signature of the Republican, Executive. This sneaks of the gravity of the situation of the army of the Republic, owing to the great odds facing them and the losses lately sustained. It proceeds: “Being of opinion that further effort would be futile, and only cause injury to the country without obtaining advantages, and convinced that ton months’ defensive war has made it impossible for the Irish people ever to accept less than full national rights and fearing it would cause delay to

DE VALERA ADDRESSES THE REPUBLICAN ARMY A HARD TASK (Rec. April 15, 5.5 p.m.) London, April 14. A Dublin telegram states that de Valera has issued a statement in connection with the death of Liam Lynch in the form of an oration to the Republican Army. “Faced in arms by former comrades who deserted your side, your task is a hard one. It is a task that only heroes would venture to undertake. You have flung yourself across a stampede of the nation, but it will be better to die nobly, as your chief died, than live as slaves. Your cause is immortal. Weariness from the exacting struggle against false teachers, and temporary losses and defeats may defer, but cannot prevail against, ultimate triumph. Tho sacrifices you are making to-day will insure it. They who to-day in ignorance calumniate you will to-mor-row honour you.”—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

President Cosgrave introduced the first Free State Budget in the Dail Eireann for the year 1922-23. He said the State’ had been engaged in a war involving abnormal expenditure, ana also suffered bjg losses through organised sabotage. The rebels had utterly failed in their attempt to bring economic pressure to bear on the Free State. There would be no appreciable increase in the existing commitments. He was prepared to exhaust the resources of the Free State in asserting the principle of ordered government. The cost of defence of the people’s liberty was well ■within their resources. There was no danger of crippling the prosperous devlopment of the country. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
