WATERFRONT WORK
RAPID CARGO SHIFTING An enquiry made of Mr. W. Bennett. manager for the Watersiders’ Employment Association, on-Saturday, elicited the statement that last fortnight hod been a good one for the workers. On two occasions tho list (900) had not been large enough, and extra hands had been engaged. It had, he said, been very satisfactory to notice how well the men were working on the waterside. In one case a steamer was not expected to sail until next day, as the amount of cargo for loading was considered too great to be got in that day. Mon were secured from the Harbour Board’s list, as all the men on the shipping company’s roll were engaged, and the ship was loaded by 4.30 p.m. of the day they started. It was excellent work, but the point was that such a result would have been thought impossible some months ago.
