FLOOD PREVENTION

MANAWATU-OROUA SCHEME BOARD MEMBERS GO OVER LOCALITY The members of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board —Messrs. Bell (chairman), Akers. Seifert. Smith, Anderson. Neilson, Wilton, McDonald, Carter, and A. H. Grant (secretary)—paid a visit on Saturday to the lower end of the Manawatu ißiver in order to acquaint themselves by observation on the spot with the suggested proposal for dealing with the control of the flood waters of the Manawatu and Oroua rivers. At the jetty at Foxton Heads, the members of the river board were joined by Messrs. Linklater. M.P., and Barber, members of the Foxton Harbour Board.

The party, accompanied by the engineer to the river board (Mr. F. C. (Hay), went up the river by launch to Foxton, and after inspecting the channel of the river made a thorough examination of tlie ground on which the proposed relief cuts and by-path channels are to he located. The excursion was beneficial in enabling the members of the board to see the nature of the proposed works, which have for their object the protection of .some 70.000 acres of land, subject to flooding in the Moutoa, Koputaroa, Makerua, and Kairanga districts. It is the intention of the board that Mr. Hay should proceed at once with the engineering survey and the collection of data for the proper design of work to attain the desired ends at the lowest cost. Tlie securing of the lands affected from flooding will turn a large area into valuable farming land, n.nd give a great stimulus to the whole district.
