MINERS’ STRIKE
ON NORTHERN NEW SOUTH WALES FIELDS
OWNERS DECIDE TO CLOSE COLLIERIES
if By Telegraph.—press association? —COPYRIGHT, Sydney, April 11. Tlie colliery owners in the Northern fields have decided to close the mines at which the miners have struck until some guarantee of continuity is given. Over 6000 men are idle. The Cabinet has considered the position of Major Ciane, the Magistrate, and decided not to grant the miners’ request to remove him.
Four Aberdare collieries have closed, and the horses have been withdrawn. Other collieries are following suit. It is understood that a special meeting of the Northern proprietors, held’ to consider the position, decided that individual managers should act as they thought fit at present, but that in the event of further trouble a unified policy should be adopted to defeat the men’s irritation tactics.
The council of the Miners’ I*’edQration advised the miners to abandon tlieir present tactics, fearing that as « result the Government would seize the opportunity as an excuse tor discontinuing the Coal Tribunal. The miners, however, ignored tho advice, and appear determined to pre. cipitate a crisis with its attendant general struggle. The mechanics in several pits have now joined the strikers. —Press Assn.,
SETTLEMENT OF STRIKE EXPECTED (Rec. April 11, 9.45 p.m.) Sydney, April 11. Two more collieries in the northern field have ceased work, but fears of a general strike have abated, and it is expected a settlement will be reached by the end of the week.—Press Assn.
