BURGLARY AT A STORE
ALLEGED CONFESSION BY , TWO MEN By Telegraph.—Press Association. Thames, April 11. Richard Henry Farrands and Thomas Joseph Leo Meagher were charged before Mr. Salmon, S.M., with burglarly at the Wharepoa store, owned by Mr. Valentine. The owner left thie store on Thursday, March 29, and on returning on Good Friday found the windows broken and the safe removed. The safrf was recovered in a quarry at Hikutaia.. with both doors blown open, and £l2 taken from it. Sergeant McDonnell gave evidence as to finding tho safe and arresting the accused. Farrands had vountariIv made a statement that he drove from Waihi in a trap with his mate to Wharepoa, where they ’ removed t„he safe, blew it open, took the cash, and drove back to' Waihi. Meagher also made a signed statement of confession. Both accused, when arrested, wgre strongly under the influence of liquor, and Meagher was on the . verge of delirium tremens.
The Magistrate committed the accused for trial. Bail was allowed on their own bonds of £2OO and two sureties of £lOO.
