ESCAPEE FROM PRISON FARM
< ALLEGES HE WAS ROUGHLY TREATED BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Te Kuiti, April 10. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Bart Moore was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of escaping from the Waikuna prison farm, near Raurimu. The prisoner was arrested yesterday in a weakened condition at Puketutu, where he was working with a road Rang. On Thursday last he made an excuse to retire for a few minutes, and escaped across country. In a statement to the Magistrate, he said that he ran away on account of rough treatment from prison officials, and was making for the Mount Eden gaol. He was serving a sentence of two years for theft from a dwelling.
