CIVIC ELECTIONS

MR WRIGHT AT KAIWARRA. Mr. R. A. Wright continued his campaign for Mayoralty by addressing a meeting at the Methodist Hall, Kaiwarra last evening. After dealing with (the work of the council during the past two years, the speaker referred .to the proposed tram line to Kaiwarra. It had been anticipated that the work which was authorised by the ratepayers would have, been commenced before now, but the fact was that the council had undertaken so much new work that its staff, although strengthened, had been unable to handle anything further. However, considerable progress had been made, and the council having definitely decided to proceed with the permanent construction of the Hutt Road, the tram track should be laid down immediately afterwards. Mr. Wright replied To the suggested alteration in the rating system outlined by one of' the candidates, and said that whatever amendment was made was immaterial as far as the ratepayer, was concerned. The iron law of .taxation still held good, viz., the consumer must pay. If he did not pay directly he certainly paid indirectly. The meeting concluded with the usual votes of thanks. MR. L.
