A RAILWAY CUT
REDUCED SERVICE ON SOUTHERN LINE BY TELEGRAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION. Dunedin, April 10. After communicating with Wellington, the local railway authorities announce that, commencing on Monday next, there will be only one express train daily north and south. The 8 o’clock mail from Christchurch and the 8.30 to Invercargill will run on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and the Invercar-gill-Christchurch train on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. The authorities say that there is not sufficient traffic to warrant running two trains, even thrice weekly, and cheap, fares could not produce sufficient business for the railways while hotel costs remain high.
