LABOUR DISPUTE
SERIOUS STRIKE THREATENED BY CANADIAN STEELWORKERS BT TBWGBAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT. (Rec. April 9, 11.10 p.m.) Ottawa, April 8. A telegram from St. John, New Brunswick, says one of the most serious strikes in Canada seems imminent, due to the demands of 20,000 employees of the British Empire Steel Corporation for a 30 per cent, increase in wages, the employment exclusively of union members, and continuation of the system whereby the company deducts union dues from the wages of employees and sends them directly to the union. The company offers a. 12 per cent, increase, but refuses io accede to the other two demands. These employees belong to the ■lnternational Mine Workers and Steel Workers’ Unions, whose heads are Americans, and who refuse to countenance the strike. The recalcitrants, However, have thrown off their alliance with th<x'nternational unions and affiliated with the Moscow International.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
