Mr. J. Scrimgeour. chief tolls clerk for the Wellington Harbour Bos rd died at; his residence at Ngaio at 1.15 p.m. yesterday after a lengthy illness. About six months ago Mr. Srimgeour became seriously indisposed and was removed to the hospital. Since then he made steady progress towards recovery. but latterly heart trouble supervened. The deceased was a native of Nelson and joined the Harbour Board staff 24 years ago. He leaves a widow, and grownup family of one son and two daughters. The board’s flag was flown nt half-mast yesterday afternoon as a tekgn of respect to the late Mr. Scrimgeour. Commissioner and Mrs. Hoggard, the new leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, are announced to conduct a special series of gatherings in the city, commencing with an openair address ait Dixon Street on Saturday night. The Commissioner pioneered tlie Salvation Army’s work in Korea, and will give a recital entitled “Korea, the Land of the Morning Calm,” in the Citadel on Monday evening. The Hon. W- Downie Stewart, Minister of Internal Affairs, will preside. The public are invited to participate. The Paris mpnieioal tax on servants has raised £140.000 In six months. A present of 101 b. of safety pins has been sent to the Bogner Children’s Hospital.
