MUNICIPAL ORCHIDS

HON. C. H. IZARD’S GIFT TO THE CITY ( J For many years past the Hon. C. H. Izard, M.L.C., has been a keen horticulturist, and at his beautiful place at Upper Hutt he had an exceptional opportunity of gratifying his love of the rare , and beautiful in flowers. Some years ago he turned his attention to orchids, and was very successful in bringing to flower many fine examples of these wonderful exotics. A little time ago Mr. Izard (who recently presented an area of park land at Wadestown to tho city), decided to present his fine collection or orchids to the city, and an orchid house is now being erected for their reception in the Botanical Gardens. Mr. Izard has written to the Mavor asking him to arrange for the removal of the orchids as soon as possible, and intimating his intention of presenting, with the collection, two volumes on orchid culture—(l) “The Orchid Cultivator’s Guide Book,” by sßurberry, originally given to Mr. Izard by his friend Mr. Robert Orr, of Lower Hutt; and (2). “A Manual of Orchidaceous Plants.” in two volumes, by Messrs. Jas. Veitch and Sons. The latter is a valuable book, and possibly the onlv one in New Zealand to-day. The Ma'yor wishes to express publicly his thanks and . appreciation to Mr. Izard for his valuable gifts to the city.
