BATHING FATALITY AVERTED

« YOUNG WOMAN IN DANGER LIFE-SAVERS TO THE RESCUE The necessity of having a life-saving organisation stationed at seaside resorts during bathing hours was emphasised, when at Lyall Bay on. Saturday afternoon the worst might have happened to a young woman had it not been for the prompt action of members of the Maranui Life-saving Club. Miss Smith Hubert (residing at 76 Taranaki Street) accompanied by Mr. A. L. Choote (of the Lands and Survey Department, Christchurch), went in for a bathe in front of the caretaker’s shed —the safe part of tho beadh —shortly before 4 o’clock. Not ■loner afterwards Mr. Choote ran to the caretaker (Mr. Binns) and informed him that Miss Hubert was in danger. Mr. Binns promptly sent out Messrs. \ . Fletcher, A. J. Carson, and G. Taylor, of the Maranui Life-saving Club, to the rescue. . Soon Miss Hubert was carried to safety in an exhausted condition, but she revived after massage. It appeared that she had got out of her depth and tho cold water numbed her. Her position was made more serious because she was not a strong swimmer. Mr. Choote was unable to swim. Much credit was given to those liftssavers who took to tho water and also to those who were on the beach ready to lend, assistance.
