BOWLS

CHAMPION SINGLES OF LOCAL CENTRE WON BY WHITE (THORNDON) Owing to the rain which fell during tho night and early yesterday, tho Victoria Club’s green was heavy when the first round of the champion singles of the centre was commenced at 9.15 a.m. As the sky cleared, .and the influence of the bright sun and wind were felt, the green became keener, but never was it really keen in the inid-summor sense of the term. On that account the games were played rapidly, with the result that the contest was all over by 4.30 p.m. The contest was controlled by the centre’s secretary (Mr. R. W. Shallcrass), who had tho ready assistances of Mr. T. A. W. Manning, secretary of the Victoria Club. Mr. F. W. Meadowcroft, president of the centre, was also present. Tile result was a win for VVUiite, a new luminary in bowls, from tho Thorndon Chib, who played very steadily, drew with consistent accuracy, and placed his bowls with judgment. The results were as follow: — First Round. Bennett (Khandallah) won by default from Upper Hutt. Reynolds (Petone) boat Green (Cen tral), 19—12. Angus (Kelburn) beat Kershaw (Hataitai), 20 —16. White (Thorndon) beat Moyrick (Hutt), 21—8. Crawford (Karori) beat Vercoo (Victoria), 23 —15. J. M. Brackenridge (Newtown) beat Bland (Island Bay), 29—3. Reid (Lyall Bay) beat Gordon (Seatoun), 20—19. T. Mayer (Eastbourne) beat Duncan (Wellington), 18—12. Second Round. Bennett beat. Reynolds, 18 —16. White beat Angus, 17 —14. Brackenridge beat Crawford, 22 —11. Reid beat Meyer, 19— 14. Semi-Final. Reid beat Brackenridge, 18—14. White beat Bennett, 23 —5. Final. White beat Reid, 20 —17. Op form the winner was the best man on tho green. It was his day out, and he made the most of it. In the first round he only allowed a solid player like Moy rick (Hutt) to score eight points, and was even less courteous to Bennett (Ka-ndallah), who was only permitted to score five points, whilst tho winner piled on twentythree. His game with Angus was more even (17 —14), but even then he looked tho winner all through. In the last game Reid got away at the start, but White, not to be denied, overhauled him on the eleventh head, and then, to make tolerably sure of things, put on seven points in the next four heads. Reid was fortunate to get a 4 on the seventeenth head, bringing his score up to 15 (to White's 17). White, however, continued to draw, unflurried and confidently, and scored a single on the eighteenth and two on the twentieth heads, whilst Reid only gon singles on the nineteenth and twenty-first heads. White received the congratulations of the president and his fellow bowlers with becoming modesty. CHAMPION PAIRS. Tho Champion Pairs will be decided on the Hataitai green on Wednesday next. BOWLS ~FOR LADIES Some eight or nine years ago a movement was started in Wellington which had for its aim and object the adoption of the game of howls by the ladies. It was particularly encouraged by the Kelburn Club, on whose green the ladies were permitted to play when the green was not wanted by the men. The ladies played fitfully for a couple of seasons and then deserted the ancient and honourable game for croquet, which flourishes throughout tho country. Though the ladies do not play bowls here they are extremelv keen on it in Melbourne, where last month no fewer than 95 pairs competed in the Victoria Ladies’ Bowling Association’s mixed tournament held at Middle Park and St. Kilda.
