MURDER CHARGE PREFERRED THE COOPERS REMANDED FOR A WEEK The date, for the preliminary hearing of tho charges against Daniel Richard Cooper and Martha Elizabeth Cooper was referred to in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when, in addition to t.ho four informations alleging tho unlawful detention of children, a charge of murder was formally preferred against each accused. Tho charges, which arose out of the discovery of the dead body of an infant at Johnsonville, wore that OH November 23, 1922, the accused unlawfully detained the infant male child of Hugo Lupi and Lily Lister, with intent to deprive ths parents of its possession, also that on December 20, 1920, November 31, 1921, and August 20, 1922. respectively they detained: (1) the infant male child of Beatrice Irene Beadle; (2) the infant female child of Beatrice Irene Beadle; and (3) the infant female child of William James Welsh and Margaret Mary McLeod. They were also charged that on October 20, 1922, at Newlands, they murdered tho infant child of Margaret Mary McLeod and William James Welsh. Mr. E. Page, S.M., was on the Bench. Senior-Detective Lewis represented the police. Mr. O. A. L. Treadwell, with him Mr. J. Maule, appeared for the male accused, and Mr. P. Levi for Mrs. Cooper, i Senior-Detective Lewis asked that the accused be remanded for a week. Mr. Treadwell said tho case was ono of great complexity, and a great deal of time would be entailed in preparing and hearing tho evidence. Owing to the extreme gravity of the matter, counsel would not care to bo rushed with the defence, and he asked for an indication of tho probable date of hearing. Mr. Lewis: There is a very heavy calendar at the Supreme Court, and it will take some timo to get this case ready. Wo aro hopeful of being ready by next Wednesday, or, at least, the following Wednesday. Thai is all I can say. The Magistrate granted tho remand, with a view to a further remand for a week if necessary.
