PROHIBITION SENTIMENT

EXTENDING IN LATIN AMERICA

(Reo. February 5, 8.25 p.m.) New York, February 5. Th* further extension of prohibition sentiment in Latin America is foreseen in the announcement of the agenda of the forthcoming ffth PanAmerican Conference in March, which provides for the consideration of measures to secure a progressive diminution of the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The United States at present is the only country to participate which has nntion-wido prohibition, but various other Central and South American countries have partial prohibition. Tn Chile and Peru there is an extremely active campaign in favour of prohibition being carried out. There is a law prohibiting the sale of liquors on Saturday and Sunday and always in mining regions. Other Latin American nations also have laws for the restriction of sale of intoxicating beverages. It is expected the conference will result in a programme of further restrictions. —Aus.-N.Z.
