HELPLESS IN HIGH WIND

LAUNCH ADRIFT IN HARBOUR

An exciting incident occurred off Point Jerninghani early last evening, when the engine of the motor-launch White Rose, which was being brought from the slip at Balena Bay to her moorings at Clyde Quay, stopped. Examination showed that the supply of benzine had run out, and with the wind an increasingly strong nor’-wester the prospects did not appear rosy for the two occupants, Messrs. N. Jack and H.‘ Potherick. As it was clear that to drop the anchor would be useless, Mr. Petherick clambered into the dinghy and essayed to row shorowards. Within four seconds, however, he was m tho water, and was obliged to swim the rest of the way, which, fortunately, was not fat. Whom he arrived with his news at the sheds of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Chio, Messrs. W. Webb and D. Quinnell set out to the launch’s assistance in the Marie. Great difficulty was encountered in towing the White Rose, to safety, and on four occasions the hawser rope snapped, but shortly before eight o’clock the boat harbour was reached.
