Dr. AV. AV. Campbell, Director of the Lick Observatory since 1901. has been elected president of the State University of California, the famous institution of which the Lick Observatory is a department. Dr. Campbell will remain at the observatory until July, in order to clear un the work of the eclipse expedition, which lie conducted at AVallal. AVest Australia, and he will still remain director of the observatory, with an associate-director to assist him.

Air. H. 16. Nicholls, secretary of the Harbour Board, is leaving for To Aroha on a pionth’s holiday. Air. A. G. Barnett, assistant secretary, will act as secretary during Air. Nicholls’s absence.

Mr. A. G. A. Harmsworth and Captain Thomas, who have been on a visit to Canterbury extending over about four months/will leave Christchurch to-day for Wellington, en route to Australia. After short visits to Queensland and Tasmania, they will go to South America, and then to England, where they are due at the end of August. On his return to England Mr. Harmsworth. who is a nephew of the Into Lord Northcliffe, will enter upon a journalistic career, starting on one of tho Harmsworth papers. Councillor J. Burns and Mrs. Burns leave to-day on a month’s holiday, to bo spent in Auckland and Rotorua.

A Press Association message from Hamilton announces tho death of Mr. William Dey, 76 years of age. Mr. Dev was a. verv early resident of Hamilton, and formerly'was Mayor of the town for nine years. Ho was very prominent in local body affairs. The funeral of the late Mr. Alphonrus Lodge, who died as tho result of a bathing accident at Day’s Bay on Thursday, took place from 315 Ihe Terrace, yesterday morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Mary of tho Angels’ Church, Boulcott Street, by tho Rev. Father Murphy, and was largely attended, those present including the whole of the members of the 15th Batterv, N.Z. Artillery, under Captain Abel (in which deceased was a sergeant), representatives of the Education Department, where deceased had been employed, representatives of tho Communi tv Club, Buckle Street, where deceased was a. zealous worker, and members of the Marist Bros.’ Old Boys’ Association. The chief mourners were deceased’s two aunts, Airs. .1. Paterson and Mrs. J. Corich. Members of tho 15th Battery acted as pallbearers, and tho cortege was headed along Willis Street and Lambton Quay by the whole battery The service at the graveside at h.arori cemetery was conducted by tho Rev. father Ainsworth. ’I ho 15th Battery supplied tho firing party (under Lieutenant Carty), and tire “Last Post” was sounded.' Among those present at tho church and at the graveside were Mr. J. P. Firth, C.M.G. (president, of tho Community Club), ex-Commissioner J. O’Donovan, Captain AV. G. Stevens, Adjutant 15th Batterv, and Captain Williams. Special wreaths sent included those from the Education Department, officers and N.C.O. s of the 15th Batterv, and the Community Club.

Mr. A. H. King, of the accounts branch of The Dominion office, was tho recip’ent last evening of a wedding present from his fellow members of the staff. In the absence of tho manager (Hr. A. Sando) the presentation was made bv tho secretary of the company (Mr. G. S. McNair). Mr. King elp'ressed warm thanks for tho gift, anil heartily acknowledged the. good wishes extended to him.
