PLIGHT OF AUSTRIA
WILL SHE BE ABSORBED? DIPLOMATIC STRUGGLE BY TBLEGBAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. —OOPYBIGHT. (Rec. August 25, 8,40 p.m.) London, August 24. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily News” says the diplomatic struggle between tho Germans, Slavs, and Italians is centring, round Austria, with a view to the latter’s absorption. It is believed that France favours the Slav ambitions, to which the Italian attitude is a barrier. France is therefore renewing M. Poincare’s proposal for joint Allied action to safeguard Austria’s independence. Britain and Italy opposed that at tho London conference, but when Italy threatened to intervene if a revolution occurred in Austria, or if Austria attempted to secure union with. Germany or effected a rapproculemont with tho Slavs, Mr. Lloyd George replied that such action might lead to war. France regards the Italian attitude as an effort to reconstitute tho Triple Alliance, with Austria us a hyphened State Between Italy and Germany, enabling these to mp.ke a common Continental policy.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CASE TO BE PUT BEFORE LEAGUE Berlin, August 24. Dr. Seipel, the Austrian Chancellor, has left for Verona to interview Signor Nchaazer, Italian Minister of Finance. Dr. Seipel states that he intended to act on advice from London and place Austria’s case before the League of Nations.—Aus.-N.Z- Cable Assn.
