Hie Edinburgh corporation has decided to confer the freedom of the city on the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Robert Horpe.

The Bethlehem and Lackawanna Steel Corporations have announced a 20 per cent, wage increase to day labourers, similar to that announced by the United States Steel Corporation.

The New South Wales Symphony Orchestra has been engaged for three concerts on, September 0,7, and 8, ifl Sydney. It is understood that ibis is the commencement of a series of engagements.

Against strong opposition the Queensland Government gagged the Bill reducing tlie salaries of members of Parliament, and certain sections of the Public Service through the second reading stages.

The annual conference of the Protestant Federation of Australia, at Ade (aide, 'representing a membership. of 400,000, resolved to ask the Federal and State Government to legislate to prevent the operation of the No Temcre Decree. A British Buddhist mission is visiting Tibet with the object of obtaining complete anthropological knowledge and of establishing the fraternal relations between Tibet and the rest of the Buddhist world. It will also consider the possibilities of establishing a Buddhist, university and hospital in Tibet.

Mr. “Pussyfoot” Johnson, ,in, an interview at Perth, said his mission was to tell America’s story of the combating of the liquor traffic. Not a penny of American money was being brought to New Zealand by the temperance organisation. He scorned the suggestion that the drug habit had increased since America went dry.

An attempt by the web forces to wreak vengeance upon Mr- Volstead, members of the United States House of Representatives, and author of the law enforcing the Eighteenth Amendment, was defeated when the House by a vote of 141 to 3 struck from the records a resolution calling upon Mr. Volstead to resign because of the alleged help given him last election by the Anti-Saloon League.
