THE CITY MILK SUPPLY
Sir, —Tho secretary of the Civic League tells us that milk has been sold in Invercargill, Christchufch, Palmerston North, and Hutt Valley Mow the Wellington prices. That may well be. Take Christchurch and Palmerston North for instance, cities in the middle of swampy flat land, where all feed for the cows can be grown on the dairy farms, and where the transit does not cost much. Surely common sense tolls one that in Wellington the conditions are quite different. Milk has to be brought from a distance, and if produced round the city hills cows have to be fi?d artificiallv to milk at all Tne remark is also made that in large families high prices for milk is a serious matter. Well producing It is a serious matter, a.nd what about the price of meat and clothe®. No one seems to bother about reducing those.
The league also seems to be a bit premature in patting itself on the back in anticipation of being instrumental in reducing the price of mi’k. Surely if the cty milk people are a business lot of men, as I believe them to ba they will not be influenced by
Gio opinions and wishes of any particular league or society, but will charge for their goods a fair price after mooting expenses, and ls;ngjust to) tho dairy farmers, the latter generally getting a lot of word sympathy, but very little practical.— I am, etc., “CITIZEN.”
