FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT

DEATH OF A VISITOR FROM NELSON SUCCUMBS TO CONCUSSION A distressing accident, which resulted in tho death of a Nelson visitor, Mr. Christopher Charles Webb, aged 55 years, occurred at Kaiwarra about G o’clock on Saturday evening. The deceased, who was a well-known bootmaker in came over to Wellington on Thursday last in order to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law, the late Mr. Owen Daly, and since his arrival here had been staying with his brother, Air. Alfred Webb, of 86 Wai pa pa Road. On Saturday, the deceased, in company with Mrs. Given Daly and her son and Airs. Emily Hand, set out in a private motor-car, driven by A(r. Louis Hilton, in order to pay a visit to a sister of tho deceased, who resides at Day’s Bay. After paying the visit, the party were returning to town, and when passing Kaiwarra about 6 o’clock, the hat of young Air. Daly was blown off. The driver was at once notified, and the car slowed down. Mr. Alfred Webb arose from his seat to get the hat, when the deceased said: “No, I will get it,” and opening the door of the motor-car stepped out on to the road. The car by this time had almost conm to a standstill, but toe deceased stepped out facing the rear of tho vehicle. He fell, and his shoulders struck the roadway first, his head striking sharply. He was so badly injured as to be rendered unconscious, and he was at once picked up and conveyed to the Bowen Street Private Hospital in the car. When picked up toe body of deceased was only four feet from the rear of the car. Despite all that medical aid could do, tho deceased was so badly injured that he died at 10.30 o’clock on Saturday night, death being due to haemorrhage caused’ by concussion. The late Air. Webb had intended leaving on his return to Nelson on Saturday, but was persuaded to extend his stay in Wellington. An inquest will be held at 9.30 o’clock this morning.
