TRAMWAY REGULATIONS

Sir —ln regard to tho statement made by myself to the Minister of Public Works to the effect "that I had attended) at least six inquests arising out ol tramway accidents,- which I behoved would never have been necessary if the tramway regulations had been given effect to." The Mayor, in reply, stated: "Tho City Council’s officers know of no inquests that have been the result of the non-enforoement of the tramway regulations ” Sir, lam nob used to making statements that are of a. nature that tend to mislead, and I certainly did not expect this extraordinary statement from the Mayor. I would therefore draw the Mayor’s attention to the remarks of Mr. J S. Evans, S.M., reported in the newspapers of October 4, 1920. This gentleman, as'the result of an inquest, stated "the question of overcrowding of cars was one that should be thoroughly investigated”; and, again, the same gentleman; "That in the interests of the public the question of overcrowding of tramcars should be considered. I urge that immediate steps be taken to nave the new tramway regulations gazetted. I understand that the Magistrate added a rider to his verdict, and gave mstnictions that same he forwarded to the Minister of Public Works. If the council’s officers did not know of this happening, I am pleased to offer the above information. "I could go further,, and give details of other inquests which, in my opinion, would not have taken place if the tramway regulations had been law, and from the above Magistrate’s remarks . and rider, I am not alone in this opinion.
