Sir, —Can you tell me when the price of sugar is to be reduced, or what was tho reason for the Government entering into another contract with the Colonial Sugar Company ? Dora the (Department think that it has anyone in its employ who is able with the limited knowledge gained during the last few years, to meet on equal terms the heads of the sugar company, Who are experts and are sure to have recent and: accurate accounts of the prospects of all the sugarproducing countries of the world before them? It is said that all sugar retailed other than that produced by the Colonial Sugar Company is to bear a distinguishing label. Why should the trade be put to this inconvenience? What a happy inspiration the label was. But one cannot help thinking. . . . Then, what is to be the legend on the label? Docs it begin with: "Beware, it may bite”? I say, away with the label, away with Government control. The merchants of this country arc quite able to take care of themselves. But I would like to know the real reason for the last contract. The very silly reasons so far given only make one curious. I am quite prepared to admit that tho Government, by its first dealing with tho company, saved ths public a lot of money.
